Description

A tradition of high spirits and celebration, King Cake has become a part of Mardi Gras throughout the world, especially the US. The unofficial food of the season, the rich and sweet, coffeecake type pastry, is indeed a tasty way to escape the everyday tasks and partake in the festive spirit.

The King Cake tradition dates back to 12th century France when a similar cake was used to celebrate the coming of the three wise men bearing gifts for the Christ child. People from all over the world celebrate Epiphany by exchanging gifts and feasting. Legend also has it that the cakes were originally baked in a ring shape and colorfully decorated in traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple, a symbol of justice; green, representing faith; and gold, to signify power. In the early days, a coin or bean was hidden in the cake, and whoever found the item was said to have good luck in the coming year. This King Cake is made with the typical, rich egg dough, shaped in a ring form and decorated with the traditional Mardi Gras colors. Each cake comes with coins, beads, and a small plastic baby hidden inside. Celebrate Fasnacht the New Orleans way!

(Caution: small plastic baby may be choking hazard)
