Description

Made in a small town in Switzerland, just west of Liechtenstein, Hornkuhkäse is no ordinary alpine cheese. The milk used is that of horned cows. In the town of Urnäsch, where the cheese is made, virtually all cows still have their horns, as opposed to the 20% in Swiss agriculture. The symbiotic relationship between animal and farmer is fundamental there, and the cheese reflects it.

Hornkuhkäse has the flavors of a true alpine; nutty, brothy, with a nice sharp hint of onion. The texture is velvety smooth, and pleasantly melts in your mouth. In 2016 Hornkuhkäse placed first runner up in the World Championship Cheese Contest.

    Alpenhorn Hornkuhkäse

I just received 2 lbs this past Friday and was eager to try it as this is the first time I ordered this cheese. As it was wrapped tightly in plastic for the 2 day shipping I opened it and let it sit for about 2 hours. First bite: nothing; next bite: boring. And from then on it was clearly a “loser of a cheese”. Consistency is like a hard rubber, dense and unpleasant, almost like a low quality rubbery Emmentaler. What a big disappointment of a cheese. What a waste of money ! Simply awful !!!

    Absolutely amazing

This cheese is like if Swiss cheese had a “sharp” variety. It is strong in flavor and creamy in texture . While it does have a strong small, I think the flavor is well worth it purchasing it. Highly recommend!

    Must have!

Personally, I am truly an Appenzellerchaes girl. This is another cheese I didn't know and was a tad afraid to introduce to my American men (1 husband, 2 sons). They loved it! And so did I. This cheese is strong, yet softer in texture than an Appenzeller. It has so much flavor but isn't bitter at all. I served the cheeses with Wurzelbrot as well as Nussbrot and this one went very well with the Nussbrot. I also like strong cheeses with a slice of bread with 'Gomfi' on it - the sweetness and the cheese go so well together. My younger son actually suggested that I use some of the cheese for Gschwellti und Chaes! My husband is always amazed at the know how of Swiss Cheese makers!

stong smell, not so strong taste

The taste is relatively mild ... which is good because I didn't like it. but that's on me. My wife loves it. I found the smell to be a little offputting in its strength, but not bad in its essence.

This is a cheese I didn’t know from Switzerland. Had it the first time from SwissFavorites and it was amazingly good. Not overpowering, yet distinct. Everybody likes it and a pound of it was gone in one afternoon.
